John Farrell
====================================================================
   John Farrell came to America about 1833. Family legend was
that John's family was well-to-do gentry, but that John had
participated in an attempt to overthrow British rule in Ulster and
that "he fled Ireland with a price on his head, arriving in America
with his fine silk clothes and a few coins in his pocket."

   Geneological records searched by the Latter Day Saints show
that John Farrell was baptized October 2, 1814, at St. Michael's
Church, Longford, County Longford, Ireland.

   Based on the history of the period, it is probable that John
Farrell had taken part in one of the many uprisings against the
British who were then in full control in Connacht and elsewhere
in the south, and were increasing their oppressive tactics in the
north where resisitance was stronger and more stubborn.

   Emigrating to America at about age 19, he found work laying
track for the Pennsylvania Railroad Company (PRR). Continuing with
PRR for the remainder of his working years, he ultimately attained
the position of Superintendent of the Tyrone Division. This is
described in detail in supplements to the section "John Farrell."
