Farrell, 88, of 142 Glendale Road and formerly of 170 Hopkins Place, Longmeadow, a Springfield Lawyer, court clerk and legal instructor, died Tuesday in Springfield's Mercy Hospital. He was an attorney and a general partner at Spooner, Wright, Farrell & Ryan in Springfield for 19 years. He retired in 1994. Born in Montague City, he lived in Longmeadow for 41 years before moving to Indialantic, Fla., and here. He attended Northampton High School, where he captained the football team and was class president. He graduated from New York University and coached football at the Lord Buckley Preparatory School in New York City. He graduated from Fordham Law School with a juris doctorate. He was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Longmeadow. He was a major in the Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a clerk of the Springfield Superior Court for more than 20 years and a member and past president of the Hampden County Bar Association in 1964-1966. He was a member of Elks Lodge 61 and a past commander of the Alfred L. Wood American Legion Post in Longmeadow. He was the author and instructor of "Lawyers Trial Practice Course" and a professor of law in the Western New England College night division. He leaves his wife, the former Barbara E. Exner, six sons, John and Richard of Indialantic, Edward Jr. of Madison, Conn., Robert of Longmeadow, Paul of West Springfield, and Mark of Groton; a daughter, Barbara L. Fitzpatrick of Agawam; and 14 grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday morning at Hafey East Longmeadow Chapels and the church, with burial in Longmeadow Cemetery.
